Chapter four

As we journey through the forest, (carbon) footprints appear. Behind every download, every AI tool, there’s an impact we can’t ignore.

Following the
will-o’-the-wisps into a brighter clearing

We set forth on a path of conscious creativity, with the UN SDG 13: Climate Action as our Northern Star. We’ve forged our Climate Action Plan and summoned a circle of guardians, our B Corp Action team, to guide us through the forest.

Carbon workshops in the wild

At our October Away Day in Devon’s countryside, we ran a climate action workshop to better understand the footprint we’re leaving behind, and how we can make it lighter. As a digital studio, we don’t have supply chains or shipping to worry about, but that doesn’t mean we’re impact-free.

Our Digital Director Rich Williams ran a brilliant Green Web Workshop to help the creative wizards understand what makes a website more sustainable. Since then, we’ve committed to using green hosting providers for new builds and have started measuring carbon improvements across our web projects as standard practice.

Donating for people and planet

As proud members of 1% for the Planet, we donate 1% of our revenue each year to environmental causes, as well as supporting Ripple Africa. This year, we want to take that even further by offering the equivalent
of 1% of our time through volunteering, creative support, and collaboration with organisations doing urgent work on the front lines
of the climate crisis.

No stomping through the forest here.
We’re treading lighter with every line of code.

Sir Gawaine and
the Greene Knight

A note from Jo Ellicott, our Green Knight
(People + Culture Manager)

“This year, I had the opportunity to take part in Carbon Literacy Training, a programme developed by The Carbon Literacy Project and ran by Grain Sustainability, a fellow B Corp doing brilliant work.

The programme is designed to educate on the carbon costs of everyday life and to give people the tools to reduce emissions individually, collectively, and organisationally. Given our priority commitment to UN Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action, I joined with the aim of understanding what carbon change could look like at SF.

To become certified as Carbon Literate, each participant must complete a final pledge: one personal action (I’m phasing Amazon out of my life!) and one involving others that will help reduce our carbon footprint.

each would that hero see, And each man marvelled much what might the meaning be, That man and horse, alike, of such a hue were seen, Green as the growing grass.

- SIr Gawaine and the Greene Knight, The Pearl Poet, late 14th century

Our internal B Corp Action Team is weaving our collective goals into our climate action plan as we speak (or as I write). If you want a taste of the climate landscape at SF, it looks a little something like this:

Goals in progress

  • Business carbon footprint
  • Ethical pension review
  • Replacing appliances with energy efficient alternatives
  • Water conservation
  • Sustainable procurement

Long term goals

  • Team carbon footprint programme
  • Sustainable content guidelines
  • Net-zero emissions transition plan

There’s still so much for us to learn, but I’m proud of our insistence on making our carbon footprint part of how we grow.

With love, Jo”
